Yellow buses, Friday night lights, and homeschool sign-ups
Welcome to issue #50!! of Trail Mix, a weekly newsletter thatās about the people, places, history, and happenings in Southeastern Arizona.
Ready or not, Vail, those big yellow buses are warming up their engines.
Whether your kids are packing their backpacks for a classroom or youāre rearranging the dining room table for another year of kitchen-table chemistry, the lazy days of summer are officially drawing to a close.
To help you navigate the transition without losing your mind (or getting stuck in infinite traffic), we've put together your guide to back-to-school season in the Vail area. Grab a cold drink and let's dive in.

š« The Vail School District Starts Back Next Monday
Yes, it really is that time already. The school district officially kicks off the 2026ā2027 school year on Monday, July 20.
Even if you donāt have school-aged kids, consider this your official neighborhood PSA: traffic patterns are about to shift dramatically.
The Bottlenecks: Mary Ann Cleveland Way and Colossal Cave Road are notorious hotspots during morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up.
The Pro-Tip: Give yourself an extra 15 to 20 minutes if your morning commute takes you past Cienega, Mica Mountain, or Empire. Keep your eyes peeled for the 15-mph school zones, and watch out for students walking or waiting at neighborhood bus stops. Letās keep our kids safe out there!
š What About Before and After-School Care?
If you're looking for a safe, structured spot for your kids to hang out, do homework, and burn off some energy after the final bell rings, you have two highly reliable local options:
Vail Community Programs (Before & After Care): Run directly through the school district, this licensed program is offered at 10 different elementary and K-8 schools across the areaāincluding Acacia, Desert Willow, Esmond Station, and Senita Valley. They offer homework support, hands-on science projects, and plenty of group play. Crucial tip: Families must schedule a quick tour with the site director before registering!

KIDCO After-School Recreation: Hosted by Tucson Parks & Rec, this budget-friendly option operates specifically out of the multi-purpose room at Mesquite Elementary. Running from 2:45 to 6:00 PM, it focuses on physical fitness, arts and crafts, and active outdoor games. Registration is handled directly through city parks and recreation.
š Friday Night Lights: The Ultimate Fall Kickoff
For many of us, the best part of school starting back up is the return of high school sports. If youāve been craving those cool desert evenings, the smell of stadium popcorn, and the roar of the crowd, the wait is almost over.
Opening night for all three of our local varsity football programs is officially locked in for Friday, August 28 at 7:00 PM. Here is where you can catch our teams for Week 1:
Cienega Bobcats: Road trip! The Bobcats are heading south to face off against Buena.
Empire Ravens: Traveling into Tucson to match up against Sahuaro.
Mica Mountain Thunderbolts: Heading up north to take on Poston Butte in San Tan Valley.
Dust off your school colors, make sure your clear bags are prepped for stadium entry, and letās get ready to support our local athletes.

ā Homeschool, Distilled.
Homeschooling this year? It is a wildly beautiful adventure, but you shouldn't have to feel like a frenzied hall monitor just to get through a school day. If you left the status quo to travel, garden, and teach your kids, you don't need to get buried under rigid worksheets and mental clutter.
Meet The Ten AMāa free daily morning email that feels like a text from a friend.
Written by me, Kimberly, a local Vail mama, itās the quickest way to clear the homeschool noise before your house even wakes up. No fluff, no toxic positivity. Just honest encouragement, simple hacks, and shared sanity in less time than it takes to brew your coffee.
š” Staying Connected: Vail's Homeschool Hubs
For the families taking the homeschool route this year, your schedule might not rely on the July 20 school bell, but finding your village is just as critical to a successful year. Vail has an incredible, active network of homeschool families.

If you're looking to build your community, find co-ops, or just meet other parents, here are three essential groups to put on your radar right now:
Homeschool Underground: This is a local co-op for K-12 filled with unit studies, activities, hikes, an archery club, and much more ā and they have an important date coming up on August 1. They are hosting their annual orientation, which marks the official opening of registration. RSVP to learn more at the orientation here or sign up for more information. Because registration only opens once a year, missing this date means you'll have to wait until next school year to join their programs.
CHET-SE (Christian Home Educators of Tucson - Southeast): Another co-op that operates right here in our corner of the desert is CHET-SE, which offers enrichment classes and a strong community network. Crucial detail for this year: They are actively limiting enrollment to keep class sizes manageable and maintain program quality. If you are hoping to secure a spot for your family, youāll want to reach out to them as soon as possible.
Homeschoolers of East Tucson: If you are looking for something highly casual, flexible, and digital, head over to Facebook and request to join this active group. It is the ultimate local crowdsourcing hub. Parents use it daily to ask for curriculum recommendations, swap used textbooks, organize impromptu playground meetups, and share details about local educational field trips.
Whether youāre waving goodbye at the drop-off line or starting day one of lesson plans at home, here's to a safe, fun, and successful school year, Vail!

The heartbeat of Vail, Rita Ranch, and Corona de Tucson is in our events. Skip the Facebook algorithm and dive straight into the Vail Community Calendar. Itās where you go to hunt down that hyper-local roadside sourdough pop-up, map out your Saturday morning neighborhood yard sales, or find a local gathering that actually sounds fun.

Got something coming up? Put it on the map. We don't want this to just be a list you read. We want you to run it. Whether you are hosting a block party, a food truck night, a charity car wash, or a live music gig, it is 100% free to add your event to the grid.
