The Trail Mix Guide to the 2026 Pima County Fair

It’s that time of year when the smell of kettle corn drifts toward Vail and the glow of the Ferris wheel lights up the I-10 corridor. The Pima County Fair is officially back at the fairgrounds from April 16 to April 26, and this year, they’re shaking things up with the theme "Color Outside the Lines." It’s a call to celebrate the bold, the creative, and the unconventional—whether that’s through the vibrant abstract art in the Home Arts building or the gravity-defying stunts on the midway. For us in Vail, having one of the state's biggest festivals right in our backyard is a yearly highlight, but it helps to have a game plan before you hit the gates.

🎡 Navigating the Midway (Without Breaking the Bank)

The fair can get pricey. Use these hacks to keep your wallet happy!

  • Canned Food Sundays (April 19 & 26): Bring 3 cans of food to benefit the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona and get free admission until noon.

Pepsi Wristband Days (April 16, 22, & 23): Bring an unopened 20oz bottle of Pepsi, Pepsi Zero Sugar, or Starry to get a $5 discount on an unlimited ride wristband.

$3.00 Tuesday (April 21): This is the ultimate budget day! Until 6:00 PM, you can snag $3 carnival rides, $3 games, and $3 select food items.

Midweek Happy Hour: Monday through Wednesday, head to the Cantina before 5:00 PM for $3 food items and draft beers.

Read and Ride: For the younger Trail Mixers, kids can earn two free carnival rides by reading three books and turning in the official "Read and Ride" form (available on the fair website).

🐮 A Taste of the Local Life

For many in Vail, the heart of the fair is in the livestock barns. Our community has deep agricultural roots, and that’s never more visible than during these ten days. You'll see plenty of familiar faces from the Mica Mountain and Cienega FFA chapters, along with local 4-H clubs like the Vail Vaqueros, as students showcase months of hard work.

Make sure to swing by the barns to see the local projects. Whether it’s a steer that weighs more than a compact car or a meticulously groomed rabbit, these animals represent a massive commitment from our local youth.

  • Show Highlights: The barns are active every day, but the energy really ramps up for the GCPRA Rodeo on the second weekend.

  • The Big Finish: If you want to see the culmination of all that effort, head to the Marvin and Patsy Selke Livestock Ramada for the auctions.

  • Large Stock Auction: Saturday, April 25, starting at 11:45 AM (Steers, Hogs, Lambs, and Market Goats).

  • Small Stock Auction: Sunday, April 26, starting at 10:30 AM (Poultry, Rabbits, and Pygmy Goats).

Supporting the auction is a great way to help local students fund their future education or their next year’s project. Even if you aren't bidding, the atmosphere during the Large Stock Saturday is an experience all its own.

🎤 2026 Michelob Ultra Stage Lineup

This year’s concert lineup is a heavy-hitter. All concerts are included with your fair admission, though you can grab upgraded seating for about $25 if you want to be closer to the action.

🎨 Coloring Outside the Lines: Home Arts & School Displays

The spirit of this year’s theme, "Color Outside the Lines," really comes to life inside the exhibition halls. This isn’t just about staying within the borders of a coloring book; it’s a celebration of breaking the rules and getting fearless with creativity.

If you head into the Old Pueblo Conference & Event Center or the Home Arts building, you'll see exactly what we mean. This year's special contests challenged local creators to push boundaries in some pretty wild ways:

  • The Splatter Paint Contest: Inspired by the freedom of flinging paint (think Jackson Pollock vibes), these entries are all about energy and zero "brush rules."

  • Culinary Creativity: Keep an eye out for the Color Outside the Lines Culinary Contest, where bakers and cooks were encouraged to ditch traditional recipes for bold flavor mashups and vibrant, unexpected presentations.

  • Hats Off to Creativity: You’ll see some truly outrageous headwear—everything from upcycled desert materials to hand-sculpted wearable art.

Local Talent on Display:

Vail is always well-represented in the Student Art sections. Keep a lookout for displays from our local elementary and middle schools, as well as the high school portfolios from Mica Mountain, Cienega, and Empire. Many of these students and their teachers earned their way into the fair by submitting their work early, and seeing their unconventional takes on Arizona landscapes and desert life is a great way to support our young local artists.

🚗 The Trail Mix Commuter Tip

Since the fairgrounds are right off Houghton, traffic can get backed up, especially during the big concert nights. If you’re heading over from Rancho Del Lago or the Foothills, consider taking Valencia or Mary Ann Cleveland to bypass the worst of the Houghton/I-10 congestion.

Know Before You Go:

  • Admission: $12 Adults / $6 Kids & Seniors (Ages 5 and under are free!)

  • Parking: $8 per vehicle.

  • Water: You can bring one factory-sealed bottle of water per person.

  • Security: All bags are searched at the gate. While not mandatory, clear bags will get you through the line much faster!

  • The App: Download the FunPass App to manage your ride tickets digitally. No more losing paper tickets in the hay!
