Welcome to issue #25 of Trail Mix, a weekly newsletter about the people, places, history, and happenings in Southeastern Arizona.

We’re in for a weekend with a little less wind, a little more sunshine, and slightly warmer temps that get us comfortably back outside again. I hope you find a moment to get some fresh air and soak up our beautiful Arizona winters. See you out there!

Rock On, Neighbors!

It is officially that time of year again! Every winter, our corner of the Sonoran Desert transforms into a global treasure map as the Tucson Gem, Mineral & Fossil Showcase returns. What began in 1955 as a humble gathering of local enthusiasts in an elementary school cafeteria has grown into the largest and most prestigious event of its kind in the world.

This year’s theme for the main Tucson Gem and Mineral Show® is "Red, White & Blue – Celebrate the Spirit of Minerals!" Expect a patriotic dazzling of colors featuring rare specimens from across the United States. Whether you are a serious collector or just love a bit of sparkle, the showcase offers everything from museum-quality crystals and massive fossils to affordable hand-crafted jewelry.

While dozens of shows pop up across the city, the "Main Show" at the Tucson Convention Center (TCC) is the crown jewel for the public, running from February 12–15, 2026. Admission is $15 (children 14 and under are free), with a $2 discount for seniors and military on Friday. Other popular stops include the 22nd Street Show and the Kino Gem & Mineral Show (both running Jan 29 – Feb 15).

Parking at the TCC can be busy, so arriving early is key; nearby garages like the Wells Fargo or La Placita offer alternatives if the main lot is full. For a smoother experience, the Kino Show offers free parking and free admission, making it a great neighborly starting point. For a fun tidbit: the showcase brings in more visitors than the population of many neighboring towns combined!

For a full list of shows and to plan your route, check out the official Visit Tucson Showcase Guide or the Tucson Gem and Mineral Society website.

SNACK BREAK

In honor of the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, we’re highlighting a special snack this week…

CANDY GEMS

  • 2 cups sugar

  • ½ cup water

  • ¼ cup corn syrup

  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon extract

  • Gel-paste food coloring, such as Tulip Red, Orange, or Soft PinkFRO

  1. Bring 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup water, and 2 tablespoons corn syrup to a boil in a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Heat until syrup registers 300 degrees on a candy thermometer. Remove from heat, and stir in 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon extract and 1 or 2 drops food coloring using a rubber spatula. (Mixture will steam and bubble when liquid is added, so be careful.) Transfer mixture to a liquid measuring cup, and let the bubbles settle slightly, about 15 seconds.

  2. Slowly pour mixture into gem candy molds just below the top. Let cool until candies harden, about 30 minutes. Remove candies from molds. Repeat with remaining 1 cup sugar, 1/4 cup water, 2 tablespoons corn syrup, 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon extract, and 1 or 2 drops food coloring (same color as first batch).

  3. Let second batch cool slightly, about 3 minutes. Top with first batch of hardened candies, flat sides together, matching sizes and shapes. Let harden and cool completely before removing from molds.
