The Small, Sweet Rituals of Blush & Bear Co.

Welcome to issue #44 of Trail Mix, a weekly newsletter that’s about the people, places, history, and happenings in Southeastern Arizona.

We are officially entering that phase of the Arizona year where our daily steps drop into the double digits, our electric bills look like mortgage payments, and our children are staring at us with the glazed-over eyes of iPads come to life.

It’s summer survival mode. The default setting is hunker down, crank the AC to 74, and pray nobody picks a fight over the last popsicle.

But even in these hot months, we still crave connection. We still want those long, slow summer nights where we look up from our screens, catch up with a neighbor, and watch our kids just be kids.

Next week, there’s a lovely reason to step outside and remember why we love calling this place home. On Thursday, June 13th at 5:30 PM, a new local collective called Blush & Bear Co. is hosting a Summer Kickoff at Purple Heart Park—and it’s a story that brings things beautifully full circle.

The Story Behind Blush & Bear Co.

Founded by Amber, a local maker who wanted to create something more meaningful than a standard toy bought off a store shelf, Blush & Bear Co. is a mobile, interactive plush-building workshop. Instead of requiring families to travel far into central Tucson to a busy mall, Amber’s dream was to bring a creative, tactile experience directly into our local parks, schools, and neighborhoods.

Choosing Purple Heart Park for the kickoff wasn’t a random choice on a map. For Amber, it’s a homecoming.

"I actually grew up around Purple Heart Park, so being able to host this event there feels really special and full circle for me," Amber shared. "Some of my own childhood memories were made in that area, and now I get to create experiences there for other families and kids in the community."

Recognizing that June afternoons are best spent indoors, Amber intentionally planned this as a sunset gathering. As the sun dips below the mountains and the air starts to cool, the park will fill with music, community, and creativity.

Making Memories, Step-by-Step

The workshop itself is designed to encourage families to slow down and create something together. For a flat $20, every child gets a completely inclusive, interactive experience without the stress of added upcharges.

When you arrive at the park, the workshop guides the kids through a really lovely, creative routine:

  • Choosing a Bestie: Kids select their plush friend from a variety of options.

  • The Stuffing Station: Helping bring their new companion to life.

  • The Heart Ceremony: This is the heart of the event—literally. Before the bear is sealed, kids hold a small fabric heart, make a special wish, and place it inside. "It turns the bear into more than just a stuffed animal," Amber says. "It becomes something sentimental and comforting that they created themselves."

  • The Personal Touches: Children fill out an official birth certificate, design a tiny custom t-shirt using fabric markers and stickers, and sit down to craft matching friendship bracelets—one for themselves, and one for their new friend.

  • Capturing the Moment: Before heading home, families can stop by a photo station with fun props to take a keepsake photo of the night.

The Details

While the event is designed with children in mind, Amber notes that it’s truly for the "kids at heart," too—teens and parents are more than welcome to make their own.

  • When: Thursday, June 13th at 5:30 PM

  • Where: Purple Heart Park

  • Cost: $20 (covers the entire experience: plush, stuffing, heart ceremony, shirt decorating, bracelet station, and photos).

Because this is a mobile setup with a limited number of plush friends, spaces are likely to fill up quickly. If you'd like to bring your family out for an easy, creative evening under the desert sky, you can RSVP by sending a direct message to Blush & Bear Co. on their Facebook or Instagram pages.

It’s a beautiful reminder that even in the height of summer, we can always find ways to gather, slow down, and make something that lasts long after the season ends. See you at the park.

If you're looking for the heartbeat of Vail next week, the Vail Community Calendar is the best place to start. It’s a digital bulletin board entirely run by us, the people who live, work, and explore here.

Use it to discover roadside sourdough pop-ups, neighborhood yard sales, and local gatherings — and use it to share your own happenings around Vail, Rita Ranch, Corona de Tucson, and beyond. It’s completely free to add your event to the grid, helping us all stay just a little bit closer to the neighbors right next door.

Check out what’s happening in our area this week and start planning your summer!
