Welcome to issue #24 of Trail Mix, a weekly newsletter about the people, places, history, and happenings in Southeastern Arizona.
Last week still felt like we were in a holiday fog, but this week, we’re starting! Vail is waking back up, and I’m excited for what can become and what we can help build together. More local businesses. More rural vibes. Less construction on Old Spanish Trail (hopefully). More real community. Let’s get into it.

LOOKING FOR LOCAL(ISH) POWDER?
Southern Arizona is finally acting like it’s actually winter. That steady drum of rain against our windows has been a welcome change from the warm winter we’ve been having, and it’s a very promising sign for those of us seeking a quick ski weekend getaway.
In the desert, "rainy and gray" usually means "white and powdery" just a few thousand feet up. If you’re looking for possible slope action, here is where to keep your goggles pointed.
The Local Legend: Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley
It’s the southernmost ski destination in the continental U.S., and it’s practically in our backyard. While Mt. Lemmon typically needs a massive dump of natural snow to get the lifts spinning (and isn't quite there yet), this recent wet weather has everyone checking the webcams daily. It’s not open for skiing just yet, but keep an eye on the forecast—when it happens, it’s the best "sick day" excuse in Vail (and maybe this is why I’m my own boss).
The Reliable Choice: Arizona Snowbowl
Up in Flagstaff, Snowbowl is already leading the charge. Thanks to a mix of early-season storms and robust snowmaking, they have several runs open and ready for carving. At the time of writing this, they’ve received 67 inches total, have 7/8 lifts open, and 36% of trails open. It’s the most "resort-style" experience you’ll find nearby, with a good mix of beginner terrain and more advanced trails already operational.
The Family Favorite: Sunrise Park Resort
Located in the White Mountains, Sunrise is the go-to for many Arizonans. They’ve been working hard to build their base, and with the recent moisture, conditions are looking up. At the time of writing this, there are 4 out of 67 trails open, 2 out of 8 lifts open, and have a base depth of about 12 inches. Those numbers will likely update after our recent winter storms. It’s a bit more of a trek than Flagstaff, but the three separate peaks offer a lot of variety once the season fully kicks in.
See you out there (and maybe on the slopes),

PET OF THE WEEK
From January 2 to January 4, Pima Animal Care Center took in 163 dogs, bringing its current census to 431. Let’s help this week’s pet of the week and all the other animals at PACC find their forever home (or at least their next foster home).

Zena (A723718)
Located At: Pima Animal Care Center - Tucson
Description: spayed female, black and white Staffordshire Bull Terrier mix.
Weight: approximately 65.00 lbs.
Age: about 5 years old.
Zena shares her kennel with another PACC pup and has been independent and easygoing when meeting other dogs in the playgroup. She’ll benefit from a patient family who will give her time to decompress from shelter life. Once she feels safe and confident, she will show you that she is playful and affectionate!

SNACK BREAK
GRANOLA BITES
1 ¼ cups Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats - (note 1)
½ cup Peanut Butter - (note 2)
⅓ cup Maple Syrup - (note 3)
1 tablespoon Chia Seeds - (note 4)
2 tablespoons Sunflower Seeds - (note 5)
¼ cup Pumpkin Seeds - (note 6)
⅓ cup Chocolate ChipsFRO
Preheat the oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Line 2 mini-muffin pan with mini paper liners. Slightly oil each paper liner. Set aside.
In a mixing bowl, add peanut butter, maple syrup, and vanilla if used. Stir until smooth.
Add in rolled oats, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chocolate chips, and salt.
Stir to form a thick and sticky batter.
Use a cookie dough scoop or tablespoon to scoop out and pack some of the batter – packing matters if you want the bites to stick together in the oven.
Release the mixture in each muffin paper liner – I made 21 of them.
Bake the bites in the oven for 15 minutes at 350 °F (180 °C) until golden brown on top.
Remove the pan from the oven and cool down in the pan without touching the bites – they firm up as they cool down.
