A Life-Saving Mission Right in Our Backyard
Welcome to issue #46 of Trail Mix, a weekly newsletter thatâs about the people, places, history, and happenings in Southeastern Arizona.
Thereâs a quiet superpower to Vail and the greater Tucson area that you might not think about every day: our neighbors.
Because we have Davis-Monthan Air Force Base right down the road, southeastern Arizona is a major magnet for active-duty service members, veterans, and retirees. They are our youth sports coaches. Our small business owners. Our friends.
But military life, including the transition out of it, comes with heavy baggage that standard healthcare doesn't always know how to unpack.

For many service members, navigating the aftermath of deployment is its own kind of battlefield. The traditional system can feel like an endless loop of red tape: waiting months for an appointment, seeing one specialist for a physical injury, jumping through hoops to find someone else for mental health, and trying to patch it all together on your own.
But things changed for one local veteran when they arrived at Davis-Monthan's 68th Rescue Squadron. For the first time, they experienced true whole-person care. Instead of waiting months to address isolated issues, a team worked together under one roof, providing support for multiple needs on the very same day.
That life-changing experience is exactly what led them to become a local advocate for Shields & Stripes.

Shields & Stripes was actually founded by Steven Nisbet, a retired Air Force Pararescueman who grew up right here in the Tucson area. Itâs an organization built on the belief that non-visible wounds like PTSD, traumatic brain injury, and moral injury cannot be solved with a single, isolated treatment.
Instead, their free, intensive 12-week program brings together mental health therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, dietitian services, strength training, massage therapy, and mindfulness. It is a full-court press for healing, and early research confirms it works.
Here's the thing about a massive, 12-week comprehensive program: it isn't something you can just turn on and off based on a one-time charity gala or a single splashy fundraiser. It requires a dedicated clinical team, physical space, and the predictability to accept veterans and first responders who are in crisis right now and can't wait for the next funding cycle.
That is why the local team is launching a monthly giving drive.
They are looking to build a foundation of dependable, predictable neighbors.
The goal? To reach 100 recurring monthly donors by the end of 2026.
It can be incredibly easy to shrug and think, "My fifteen or twenty-five bucks a month won't make a dent." But look at the math: fifty neighbors giving $25 a month adds up to $15,000 a year. In the world of crisis intervention, that is a life saved. That is a family restored.

The transition from military to civilian life doesn't end when the retirement ceremony wraps up. The identity shift, the adjustment, and the wounds that surface years down the road are part of an ongoing journey.
For a neighborhood like Vail, where that transition is happening constantly, monthly giving is one of the most direct ways a neighbor can say: We see you. We are glad you are here. We've got your back.
You don't need to be a doctor or a veteran to serve this community. Showing up with a small, reliable monthly gift removes the financial barrier entirely, ensuring that the program remains 100% free for the people who need it most.

If you want to join the team, you can jump onto shieldsandstripes.org today to set up a recurring gift. They have structured tiers to make it easy:
Bronze: $25/month
Silver: $50/month
Gold: $100/month
Or, if $10 a month is what fits your budget right now, that is deeply appreciated too!
As part of the crew, you'll get regular updates on the research milestones and the direct impact your dollars are making.
Own a local business or run a community group? You can partner up by hosting awareness events, setting up workplace giving campaigns, or inviting the team to speak to your members.

Are you a veteran or a family member who is quietly struggling right now? Please don't carry it alone. Reach out directly via the contact page at shieldsandstripes.org or email [email protected]. The first step is always the hardest, but there is a whole team waiting to help you write the next chapter.
Let's take care of our own, Vail.

If youâre trying to find the actual heartbeat of Vail, Rita Ranch, and Corona de Tucson next week, skip the generic algorithms and dive straight into the Vail Community Calendar. Think of it as our collective digital bulletin board entirely fueled by the people who live, work, and explore right here in our corner of the desert.
Itâs where you go to hunt down that hyper-local roadside sourdough pop-up, map out your Saturday morning neighborhood yard sales, or find a local gathering that actually sounds fun.
Got something coming up? Put it on the map. We don't want this to just be a list you read. We want you to run it. Whether you are hosting a block party, a food truck night, a charity car wash, or a live music gig, it is 100% free to add your event to the grid.
